LA Unified blocks student AI access district-wide as NYC pauses AI for 600K younger students

Los Angeles Unified has blocked generative AI on every student device: Google Search still works, but AI Mode is disabled, and AI Overviews can still surface since Google offers admins no full off switch. Teachers keep access; the moratorium applies only to students.
Per WSJ, New York City is pausing student-facing generative AI through eighth grade — affecting nearly 600,000 students — and banning companion chatbots across all grades. High schools take a controlled path: up to 50,000 students can join teacher-supervised AI pilots, with twice-yearly AI literacy instruction for all. NYC had banned ChatGPT in 2022 before lifting it for a custom AI teaching assistant.
