Grok Bot team's design recap: replacing Chat with persistent Bots as the core product object
xiaohu · x · 2026-09-04
xAI's official design recap explains how Grok Bot was redesigned for persistent agents that remember work across sessions, run in the background, and act proactively.
The problem: Traditional AI products assume the user is always present. A Bot that owns tasks long-term needs a stable product object—chat histories sink and fragment continuous responsibility.
Design thread: every new capability removes one layer of UI that induces constant supervision.
- Sidebar lists Bots (Kenny, Justin, etc.) with their latest progress and pending approvals, not past conversations
- Avatars carry identity, six work states, and minimal progress confirmation
- A dedicated computer serves as the Bot's workspace, with structured, inspectable outputs
- Routines trigger work from time, external events, or other Bots—no new prompt needed
The goal: the Bot handles execution; humans step in only for judgment and exceptions.
