Arm's physical AI lead says robotics is entering a system-level hard phase

Reporting from the World Robot Conference, the author notes that while demo robots look impressive, a robot that sorts flawlessly on a production line still fails at pushing a cart and buying rice at a supermarket. Arm's global head of physical AI, Federico Pecora, said physical AI is moving from a "single-capability validation phase" into a "system-level hard phase."
In open environments, visual perception, language understanding, path planning, millisecond-level motion control, and safety guarantees must coordinate in real time on one hardware architecture. Arm doesn't build robots but supplies the compute foundation — edge sensors, real-time controllers, and high-performance chips — to seamlessly connect a robot's "brain" and "cerebellum."
