Developer jasperdeboer argues X users recognize you by your avatar, not your username, so changing it abruptly makes you invisible. His tool Avamorph generates 4 intermediate avatars between your old and new one and emails you on five weekly switch dates.
It costs a one-time €4.99, includes a private page with all avatars and dates, and deletes everything 14 days after the final switch. A neat indie micro-product play; lucasmeijer is already using it.
