AGI doomer thread claims labor's economic value goes negative and the monetary system won't survive
Promptmethus · x · 2026-09-04
A widely-shared thread by @rationalaussie argues the current monetary system will not survive the transition to AGI. The author claims we are approaching a "discontinuity event" where the economic value of selling human labor goes negative — delegating an entire task to an AGI will outperform any human attempt to add value.
In that world, 30-year mortgages, corporate career ladders, higher education built on memorizing useless facts, and even human identity itself become incompatible, since civilization rests on humans competing and cooperating economically. When humans can't compete with AGI and businesses have no incentive to cooperate with former workers, the author predicts collapse.
This is a macro speculation piece with no supporting data — worth reading as a viewpoint, not as evidence.
