Blogger finds reader clicks and Google AI Overview citations barely overlap
shashib · x · 2026-09-04
Marketing blogger Shashi Bellamkonda compared two reports over the same set of posts: on-site pageviews from Blogger versus Google Search Console's Generative AI Features data, which tracks how often posts get pulled into AI Overviews. Expecting overlap, he found two nearly disjoint lists.
The posts readers clicked chased drama — OpenAI cutting off partners, industry rivalries — while Google's AI Overviews cited an entirely different set of articles. His takeaway: human readers and Google's AI are looking for fundamentally different things.
He argues sites should restructure for both audiences: TL;DR and key takeaways at the top, semantic HTML and JSON-LD so search engines and LLMs cite the source accurately, plus a llms.txt machine-readable summary — built to be read by people and machines alike.
