Holden: Strategy Reads Only the Legible — Apple's AI Edge Doesn't Beat Bad Culture
holdenmatt · x · 2026-09-04
- Matt Holden pushes back on Dick Costolo's claim that the personal agent consumer space is "Apple's to lose": Apple does have unmatched context (contacts, location, payments, Watch), yet iMessage search remains terrible, so advantage doesn't automatically convert.
- He argues "strategy" only processes legible, after-the-fact information, poorly predictive of the future and rarely where asymmetric outcomes come from. Years of "Apple is best positioned for X" arguments coexist with Siri being awful 16 years after launch and Spotlight getting worse.
- The real drivers are messy culture, leadership, and organizational dysfunction, not externally legible advantages — the same lens that wrongly dismissed Cursor as a thin VS Code clone before it became one of the biggest startups.
