Matt Shumer details the 'Manager Loop' that makes Astra handle long-horizon builds
mattshumer_ · x · 2026-09-04
Matt Shumer explains how he got Astra to pull off super long-horizon builds. Astra is powerful but struggles with very hard tasks out of the box, so he tested multiple approaches and landed on the 'Manager Loop': old tricks used with weaker models a couple of years ago, layered with new ideas. The first step is launching a 'manager' agent you align on goals with, which then decomposes and orchestrates the rest — dramatically boosting Astra's ability on long-horizon tasks.
