GPT-6 Improves Prime Gap Bounds by a Full Order of Magnitude, First Leap Since the 1930s
ChrSzegedy · x · 2026-09-04
As part of the GPT-6 Astra launch, mathematician Mehtaab Sawhney announced that Astra improved the longest gap between primes by roughly a log log n factor—the first such improvement since the 1930s. Prior work by Ford, Green, Konyagin, Maynard, and Tao (and GPT 5.6 Sol) achieved only logloglog n factors.
Mathematician jdlichtman notes GPT-6 beat the Ford-Green-Konyagin-Maynard-Tao result by a full order of magnitude in just 8 pages, and introduced a completely new starting point on the problem—likening it to discovering a new chess opening after decades, and calling it among the most significant results from AI, alongside the 2/3 Zeta Zeros proof.
