Google confirms Gemini 3.8 Flash in AI Mode drops citations and links, fix on the way

SEO practitioners including Gagan Ghotra and Glenn Gabe found that Google AI Mode running the newly rolled-out Gemini 3.8 Flash is far less likely to cite sources or include links than the default model, with top-of-funnel queries returning no citations at all. Google's Robby Stein confirmed on X that this is not working as intended and a fix is coming soon, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable.
