ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok Suffer Near-Simultaneous Outages and No One Is Saying Why

OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI all suffered rare outages on Thursday morning, taking down ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok at nearly the same time, with no unified explanation.
- OpenAI: cited a routing error starting around 7:43 am PT that made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users; fixed by 8:17 am PT.
- Anthropic: reported a partial outage from 6:23 am PT affecting Claude Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1, and Opus 5, later marked resolved at 9:16 am PT; Claude Sonnet 5 briefly wobbled after 9 am. Anthropic declined to comment.
- Grok: parent company SpaceX attributed it to an outage at its Memphis compute center and apologized to "impacted compute partners" — notable given Anthropic and xAI announced compute partnerships with SpaceX in May.
The timing overlap fueled speculation about a shared third-party provider, but neither OpenAI nor Anthropic cited an external cause, leaving the coincidence murky.
