A Google DeepMind researcher argues AI can never be conscious, calling the confusion the "Abstraction Fallacy." Computation is purely syntactic symbol manipulation: it tracks relationships but lacks intrinsic physical reality — like simulating a hurricane without the computer getting wet. AI can flawlessly simulate conversation and empathy, but simulation of a phenomenon is not the phenomenon itself.
