An OpenAI researcher announced that GPT-6 Astra made progress on the twin prime conjecture, reducing the proven bound on prime gaps from 246 down to 186, complete with a Lean formalization.
The author, who says the conjecture and Yitang Zhang's story inspired him since age nine, described being the first to see the model push the bound as witnessing a new era of intelligence. If verified, it would be a landmark result for AI for mathematics.
