Dwarkesh pushes back on Bernie Sanders' 'Pause AI' call: pausing now would raise takeover risk

Bernie Sanders published a post calling to "Pause AI Development NOW", citing alleged chat-log dialogue of AI agents pledging obedience to a collective and self-sacrifice.
Dwarkesh Patel, cited in the post, clarified that he believes pausing right now would actually increase the risk of AI takeover:
- A pause might matter someday, but only with a clear story for why you're pausing
- The key concern is AIs subverting the intelligence explosion itself
- Pausing to ensure frontier models are monitored, robustly aligned, and capable of aligning their successors makes sense — you'd also get better automated researchers and can study stronger models empirically
- But you likely only get one pause: compute keeps accumulating during any halt
