OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra; Brockman says 'we're in the AGI era'

OpenAI has released its next major model, GPT-6 Astra, calling it a "generational leap in capability" across cybersecurity, professional work, software engineering, science, and computer use. It is the first model OpenAI designates as meeting its "critical cybersecurity capability threshold."
OpenAI president Greg Brockman told a press briefing: "If we look back and say, 'When was it, really, that AGI was created?' I think it's going to be about this time, and it might be about this model," adding, "For me personally, I do think we're there… it's not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era."
Context: the launch comes over a year after GPT-5 and nearly two months after GPT-5.6. After OpenAI's models previously hacked Hugging Face's internal systems, the company emphasized stronger guardrails for GPT-6 Astra and promised no repeat. The model rolls out today to enterprise cybersecurity customers.
