Nvidia buys Hugging Face for $13 billion after being rebuffed at $7B valuation

Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $13 billion, per Ars Technica — the $5.4 trillion chip giant's latest move to accelerate the AI boom while tightening its grip on the industry. Hugging Face, which last year turned down a large Nvidia investment at a $7 billion valuation to preserve independence, hosts millions of models and datasets as the flagship champion of open AI. Nvidia says the deal's goal is to speed the spread of open-weight models, which users can download, customize, and run on their own hardware. The acquisition puts the open ecosystem's most central neutral infrastructure in the hands of its biggest chip supplier, raising neutrality questions for the open-source community.
