Nvidia acquires Hugging Face for $12.9B, pledges to keep it open

The Register reports Nvidia confirmed a definitive agreement to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, expected to close in H1 2027 pending regulatory approval. Owning a main hub for discovering and distributing open models brings Nvidia closer to workloads on its GPUs; Nvidia pledged the platform stays open, with free choice of models, frameworks, clouds and accelerators — Nvidia compute not required.
