Google AI Mode with Gemini 3.8 Flash barely cites sources, SEOs find

Google rolled out Gemini 3.8 Flash to AI Mode subscribers, and early testing by SEOs Gagan Ghotra and Glenn Gabe shows the new model rarely shows any links or citations for top-of-the-funnel queries. Compared side-by-side with the default model, 3.8 Flash is markedly less citation-friendly, as reported by Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable. The cause is unclear, and sites relying on AI-search citations for traffic should watch this closely.
