Anthropic upgrades Claude computer use: background operation frees up your mouse and keyboard

新智元 · wechat · 2026-09-03

Anthropic has overhauled Claude's computer-use capability, with the headline change being true background operation. On macOS 15+, Claude now works in background windows by default, leaving your mouse and keyboard free; it pauses when it detects you typing and only takes over the full screen after asking permission once per session. The feature is in Beta for Claude Pro and Max subscribers, macOS first.

Under the hood it still runs a perception-decision-action-feedback loop: screenshot the window, have the vision model identify buttons and fields, execute clicks/typing, then verify against a fresh screenshot. Execution follows a three-tier fallback: API connectors (Gmail, Google/Microsoft suites) first, then a built-in browser, and screen interaction only as a last resort. The update spans Cowork and Claude Code.

The real story, the article argues, is not convenience but the second seat on your desktop: humans stay in front making decisions while agents handle long, repetitive, cross-app work in the background.
