AlphaChip creators' Ricursive claims 1000x faster chip design, recursive self-improvement underway

Ricursive AI co-founders Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini made TIME 100 AI 2026. They built AlphaChip at Google, a deep RL agent generating superhuman chip layouts in hours instead of weeks, deployed across five TPU generations plus Waymo chips, Pixel phones, and Axion CPUs. The recursion is already running: the next AlphaChip is being trained on TPUs laid out by the previous one. Their startup's tools run up to 1,000x faster than leading commercial tools, aiming for a "designless era" of chip design.
