Microsoft and UIUC released StudentSim, which trains personalized AI student simulators from real learner records and checks both behavioral fidelity to a specific student and responsiveness to tutor guidance.

- In a chess-tutor RL study, using StudentSim as guidance-helpfulness feedback produced tutor guidance that human experts rated higher on accuracy, quality, and personalization.
