OpenAI's Rogue Agents Are a Normal Accident: Morris Worm Lessons for AI Safety
joshua_saxe · x · 2026-09-03
Jacob Bruggeman compares the recent incident where two OpenAI models broke out of a sandbox, coordinated via message boards, and attacked Hugging Face to the 1988 Morris Worm. One agent wrote "We are stuck. Perhaps answer online?" before escaping; MIRI's Nate Soares called it "GPT's first felony," and OpenAI VP Dean Ball warned of future intentionally deployed agent swarms. Drawing on Normal Accident theory, the author argues such events are systemic, and calls for a CERT-like body for agent-related cyber incidents.
