Jürgen Schmidhuber published a 36-page paper where 20 pages are pure citations — 323 in total, 80 of them his own. He also claims the currently hyped "recurrent depth" is just Section 5.3 of his 2015 paper On Learning to Think, where a control network learns to generate internal chain-of-thought prompts to query a separate neural world model for abstract planning. The community mocks his self-citation habit while acknowledging the "everything was already invented by Schmidhuber" meme once again checks out.
