VLC hits 7 billion installs, no VC, no ads in 20 years

VC maxniederhofer recalls that one of the first companies he reached out to when starting in VC in 2007 was VLC, the French open-source project. Now at 7 billion installs, it's the most widely distributed desktop app ever — nonprofit, never took VC money, never ran ads. He credits project lead JB Kempf's admirable stewardship.
