Gary Marcus: Musk's AI predictions just keep sliding dates back while the media looks away

Gary Marcus · rss · 2026-09-03

Gary Marcus argues Elon Musk's new prediction — superhuman AI on all digital tasks by end of next year — is his 2024 prediction recycled with the date quietly pushed from 2025 to 2027. Musk ignored Marcus's two $1M bets. Marcus also faults The Information for uncritically relaying Musk's claims of a billion humanoid robots and "5x more productive" workers, which Rodney Brooks called a "hallucination" given deployed humanoids are far below 1% of human productivity. He extends the critique to softball coverage of Altman (TIME), Amodei and Hassabis, citing rare exceptions like The Economist's editor and Ronan Farrow who actually press these figures on their records.
