ChatGPT's hard conversation-length limit frustrates users even on Pro

A heavy ChatGPT user (long-running projects, research, scheduled tasks, document analysis) complains that ChatGPT eventually hard-stops conversations with "You've reached the maximum length for this conversation" — with a screenshot as proof — and even the pricier Pro tier doesn't fix it. Users end up anxiously tracking how close a chat is to the wall and manually summarizing before it dies.
The author argues the issue isn't finite model context windows but conversation continuity: a modern AI workspace should decouple how much the model processes per response from the lifetime of a conversation.
His proposed fix:
- Progressively compact older messages into structured summaries (decisions, key facts, preferences, rejected alternatives, open questions, conclusions)
- Keep recent messages verbatim, retain access to originals, and retrieve the source section when an old detail becomes relevant
- From the user's perspective it stays one conversation, regardless of underlying architecture
He illustrates with a months-long AI platform selection conversation: a decision history like that can't be replaced by pasting a summary into a fresh chat.
