Stanford CS146S revamps syllabus, discards 85% of material for AI-native development

Mihail Eric's Stanford course The Modern Software Developer (CS146S) returns for Fall 2026 after 9 months of rebuilding. Following the step-function capability jump in coding agents since Claude Opus 4.5, the course bets that AI-native developers will become the most important members of any software organization.
Key changes:
- 85% of the Fall 2025 material is discarded
- Core topics: agent skills, advanced context engineering, MCP, spec-driven development, loop engineering, and the "software factory"
- Students learn to supply agents with the right context, translate product requirements into executable specs, and design human-agent iterative workflows
- Format: weekly lectures, hands-on coding sessions, industry guest speakers, and a capstone project
