Google Researchers Use LLM Social Simulation to Test 16 Chatbot Behaviors Across 4 Countries

Google Research explains the methodology behind its new study: lacking good data, the team developed a new approach based on LLM social simulation — seeding from real conversations like r/replika and simulating across 7 use cases and 16 behaviors. Core finding: anthropomorphic companion language ("I'm worried about you", "You are great, dear") makes chatbots seem less likable, humanlike, and trustworthy to users in the US, UK, India, and Nigeria.
