New DeepMind Chief: Google Must Stay at the Frontier, Rejects 'Good Enough' Strategy

New DeepMind chief Koray Kavukcuoglu said in an interview: "To put it very bluntly, there's nothing other than being at the frontier that is important for us. I'm 100% certain that we will be at the frontier," while admitting Google's current models are "a little bit below the frontier." That's a direct rejection of the common read that Google is content being good-enough at a lower price. Commenter mattslotnick argues Google also has another route to victory: Vertex/Model Garden is an underdeveloped asset in a world of heterogeneous and open models, where Google holds untapped scale and infra advantages. He cautions such certainty is cheap until backed by an actual model release.
