After the "neuralese" panic: experts call for legislated independent audits of frontier AI labs

Reacting to the recent panic over the false claim that OpenAI is "doing neuralese," Dean Ball argues the episode shows why regulation is needed — especially rapid institutionalization of auditing and technical assessment of frontier AI labs, since we now adjudicate complex technical claims on social media with almost no ground-truth information.
SOhEigeartaigh agrees the situation is "infuriating all round" and calls for legislation that gives independent, safety-minded experts deep access, compute budgets, and ongoing timeliness to scrutinize labs' architectural decisions and report candidly to government and the public. Without that, he warns, we get ill-informed shouting on Twitter instead.
