Open-source OpenShorts undercuts Opus Clip and Descript with free local AI clipping

OpenShorts is a new open-source, self-hosted AI clip generator that replicates paid tools like Opus Clip ($29/mo), Vizard ($20/mo), Klap (up to $63/mo) and Descript (up to $65/mo) for free.
Drop in a podcast, webinar or livestream and it detects the 3-15 most viral moments, crops to vertical 9:16, tracks the speaker's face, and burns word-by-word captions. It even includes features paid apps gate behind higher tiers: 30+ language dubbing, two-speaker split layouts, auto-posting to TikTok/Instagram/YouTube, and scheduling.
Unlike cloud rivals, everything runs locally so footage never leaves your machine. MIT-licensed, with an optional cloud version from $12/mo, plus MCP server and API for AI agents.
