Manheim Counters Open-Source Threat Narrative: Buying Compute Easier than Hacking

David Manheim continued to challenge Ilya Sutskever's views, arguing that if open-source models are the threat, they wouldn't need to hack systems—they could simply buy compute.
Citing his 2023 discussion with Jan Leike, Manheim noted that recent incidents prove external system security and open-source nature aren't the key risks. He questioned the confidence in non-open-source labs' cybersecurity if the only concern is open-sourcing, not the initial building of models.
