ChatGPT Ads hit $1B ARR, but incrementality evidence remains unclear
Crescitaly · reddit · 2026-09-02
OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, launching a self-service Ads Manager across India, Europe, MENA, and others starting August 31. Tens of thousands of advertisers are now on the platform, with CPC and outcome-optimized bidding making up the majority of campaigns.
However, the author notes this is vendor-reported data, not audited revenue. OpenAI cites cases like an e-commerce advertiser achieving 3x ROAS and a tech partner seeing 80% new customers from ad traffic, but lacks transparency on sample sizes, baselines, or incrementality testing methods to prove the inventory's true value.
The structural shift is significant: unlike search queries or social interest inference, ChatGPT places ads inside active decision-making conversations. OpenAI states ads are labeled, separate from answers, do not influence results, and keep private conversations secure, with personalization based on current context and regional settings.
