Dan Luu fact-checks Ed Zitron: how accurate were the most-cited AI skeptic's predictions?

burny_tech · x · 2026-09-02

Dan Luu systematically checked how the predictions of Ed Zitron—the most widely cited AI skeptic he's seen—actually panned out. He discloses his own biases: no strong pro/anti AI stance; in 2022 he found futurist predictions (including Kurzweil) generally wrong in both results and reasoning, but since 2015 he's repeatedly argued people underestimate AI's ability to displace humans. His boring position: if something is currently happening, people saying it can never happen are probably wrong.

He also pushes back on the claim that AI defenders are self-interested liars: he holds AI companies only via index funds, is underweight AI in his seed portfolio, and doesn't work at any AI lab or supplier.
