Fable 5.1 update: cache cost drop reduces need for /compact
dotey · x · 2026-09-02
For Fable Studio's Fable 5.1 model, official advice suggests that with significantly lower cache prices, frequent use of the /compact command is no longer necessary and is more expensive. However, user @dotey tested this and found that not compressing does not perform as well as maintaining 200k auto-compression. Additionally, if the cache has expired (e.g., the 1-hour limit in Claude Code), using /compact can incur high costs.
