Dev scanned ~15,000 MCP servers: only about a third verifiably alive
Eiji-Himura · reddit · 2026-09-02
A developer spent a weekend merging the official registry, npm, and GitHub data into a deduplicated snapshot of 14,973 MCP servers:
- 5,340 verified alive — about 35% of published servers
- 51% have a resolvable SPDX licence
- 21% dormant/abandoned where maintenance could be determined
- 56,395 extracted tool names, median 8 tools per server
- 48% of registry entries are basically just a name with almost no useful metadata
Methodology lesson: the first classifier invented data; disallowing classification without enough evidence pushed the other bucket from 8% to 21%.
Deliverables: cleaned dataset, a 22-category taxonomy, maintenance/licence/tool metadata, and a methodology report. The author asks the community: would anyone use this, would you pay $19 for a one-time snapshot, and would an API or refreshed version change that? Feedback wanted on the taxonomy (ai-ml is overloaded).
