Study Finds LLM Embeddings Predict Brain Language Response Better Than Simple Metrics

A new preprint study compares behavioral and brain responses to language. It finds that behavioral measures are largely reducible to simple predictors like surprisal and word frequency. However, for brain measures, LLM embeddings provide significant additional predictive power.

This suggests that while simple models explain behavior, the brain processes language at a level that captures meaning, aligning more closely with how LLMs represent information.
