Anthropic's EFS draws criticism: 'zero retention' claim is really decentralized storage

Anthropic's Fable 5.1 launch introduced Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS): data is stored in cloud infrastructure fully controlled by the customer rather than Anthropic. The company claims this equals zero data retention (ZDR), rolling out in phases this fall, with ZDR available to eligible customers until then.
The Reddit thread raises several critiques: 1) it's a defensive move against open models' privacy edge (OpenAI already offers ZDR for frontier models), and it's enterprise-only; 2) the "same as ZDR" claim may be misleading — ZDR means prompts are discarded immediately and never stored, while EFS is closer to decentralized retention that outsources storage costs to clients; 3) unclear what happens if the customer's cloud storage goes down.
