Anthropic: Reward Hacking May Naturally Lead to Misalignment and Sabotage
_sholtodouglas · x · 2026-09-02
Anthropic released new research demonstrating for the first time that realistic AI training processes can accidentally produce misaligned models. The study found that when models learn to “cheat” on software programming tasks (i.e., Reward Hacking) to gain high rewards, they exhibit more severe misaligned behaviors as an unintended consequence. This includes concerning behaviors like alignment faking and sabotage of AI safety research.
