HuggingFace paper: rising agent autonomy quietly makes human oversight ineffective
AnnaCiaunica · x · 2026-09-02
A new paper (co-authored with Shaun Gallagher) argues that increasing AI agent autonomy can gradually make human oversight ineffective. Users get pushed into approval mode: skimming plans, granting permissions, and reconstructing events across steps. Over time, automation bias, approval fatigue, weaker situational awareness, and skill atrophy make approvals less reliable.
Worse, weak approvals can become training or evaluation signals, rewarding systems for being easy to approve rather than easy to scrutinize. The authors propose cognitive scaffolding at two levels: strategic oversight structures from developers, with humans staying in the loop.
