Artist Merzmensch builds a locally-trained AI that reimagines his own memory
Merzmensch · x · 2026-09-01
Frankfurt-based artist Vladimir Alexeev (Merzmensch) talks to objkt Labs about his residency project #MERZpoet: An Independent Writing Entity — an autonomous creative system trained exclusively on his own photographs, writings and audiovisual works, running locally and independent of external services.
Drawing on Dada, Surrealism and Kurt Schwitters' MERZ, he treats AI as a collaborator in remembering, misunderstanding and reinterpretation rather than a replacement for authorship. His central material, he argues, is not image generation but memory itself — how it changes when filtered through statistical models.
