OpenAI's Dean Ball: I'm not here to sing a lullaby about AI — frontier lab insiders are concerned too

deanwball · x · 2026-09-01

Dean Ball posted a long thread responding to critics. He clarifies he was not hired by OpenAI to "fix AI's image problem" and has no intention of making readers comfortable about the age of tokens.

He states plainly that the transformation underway will have incredible aspects and extraordinarily fraught ones; the public is very often right to be concerned, and he himself — like most people he knows at true frontier labs — is concerned. He vows to keep telling the truth as he sees it, even when it is poor marketing for the industry or causes him personal sadness and fear, and pushes back at those trying to "RLHF" him into reassurance.
