Coinbase Launches x402 Payment Protocol for API-Free AI Agent Data Access
kleffew94 · x · 2026-09-01
Coinbase has introduced the x402 open payment standard, integrated with Massive's US stock market data, allowing AI agents to access real-time snapshots, historical data, and SEC files without human intervention or API keys. The protocol uses the HTTP 402 status code to embed payment requirements within requests, enabling agents to settle per-request fees using USDC stablecoin. This aims to eliminate the friction of traditional subscriptions and account management, building infrastructure for autonomous financial trading agents.
