UK launches £100m fund for AI startups fixing public services

The UK government announced a £100m competition fund for British AI startups that can improve public services, targeting priorities including healthcare, cyber security and defence. Winning projects are eligible for contracts worth £250,000 to £10m, with most deals expected between £1m and £3m, and smaller firms may receive upfront payments.
The announcement follows criticism of a £330m, seven-year NHS contract awarded to US software firm Palantir under the previous government. The UK will also open a new AI Economics Institute, led by MIT professor Simon Johnson, open to collaboration with G7 partners.
