A simple software update integrated by Google and American Airlines can cut the climate warming impact of airplane contrails by 69%. By analyzing weather patterns and suggesting minor altitude adjustments, the AI avoids cold, humid pockets where contrails form. A 2023 pilot with 70 flights achieved a 54% reduction manually, but route planning was time-consuming. The solution involved embedding AI forecasts directly into Flightkeys, the dispatch software, scaling the trial to 2,400 commercial flights.
