Google's open-source SpeciesNet model processes 11M wildlife photos in days

A research team in Tanzania cleared a backlog of 11 million wildlife photos in just a few days using Google's open-source SpeciesNet AI model. The model automatically identifies nearly 2,500 species of mammals, birds, and reptiles. The Snapshot Serengeti project had previously relied on volunteers to manually tag images from motion-triggered cameras, but the sheer volume overwhelmed them. The AI intervention solved this massive logistical burden.
