AI Agent study is filled with ephemera: generalizing agent behavior is impossible
jachiam0 · x · 2026-09-01
The author offers a philosophical critique of current AI Agent research. He argues that many observed agent behaviors are ephemera—consequences of very specific training configurations, datasets, and limitations inherent to this generation of models.
Consequently, it will be almost impossible to confidently make general statements like "AI agents do X" for years. The author likens the situation to describing the flecks of foam at the edge of a wave as if it's the wave, noting we lack the true language for the wave or the deep water beneath it.
