AI Agents Failed Research Task: Bottleneck is Judgment, Not Execution
JeremyNguyenPhD · x · 2026-09-01
A study by Kirgis et al. tasked AI agents (powered by Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.6 Sol) with reproducing two unpublished NeurIPS papers. While the agents successfully executed hundreds of experiments, debugged GPU crashes, and compiled camera-ready LaTeX within 6 days, the resulting papers were rejected by the original authors. The conclusion suggests that the core limitation for current AI research agents is judgment, rather than execution capabilities.
