Lambda co-founder warns offshoring data centers will undermine US reindustrialization

Lambda co-founder Stephen Balaban warned that offshoring AI data center construction would not only lose data center jobs but also undermine reindustrialization and the jobs it would bring back.
Key Points
- AI Drives Grid Upgrades: The AI buildout is driving the development of the domestic grid, paving the way for offshored industries to return to the US.
- Strategic Assets: He views AI and compute as national strategic assets.
- Foundation for Industry Return: Grid development paves the way for more industrial onshoring, such as electric arc furnace mills for aluminum and steel, micromills, turbine manufacturing, and other energy-intensive industries.
He called it a "national tragedy" to offshore data center buildout at the very moment the country needs to rebuild its grid.
