Engineers must find unique value that models cannot replace

Sean Goedecke argues that software engineers need to leverage their expertise to do what models can't, specifically their familiarity with the systems they work with and their ability to communicate about them clearly. With the cost of writing code plummeting due to LLMs, an engineer's "value over replacement" is critical. Retreating to "hard engineering" areas may offer only temporary refuge, as model capabilities continue to improve. Engineers should focus on areas where they can maintain a long-term advantage over models.
